Historically, the name Blattaria was used alongside Blattodea, but the first name has been used to refer to "true" cockroaches exclusively, while the latter name also includes termites. The current catalog of cockroaches worldwide uses the name Blattodea for the family generically. Another name, cockroach, is sometimes used for extinct relatives of cockroaches. The oldest fossil cockroach-like ("blattopterans" or "Roachids") date to the Carboniferous period 320 million years ago, as do fossil Roachoid nymphs.

Since the 11th century, scholars have believed that cockroaches were an ancient group of insects that had a Devonian ancestry, from the 19th century to one of the insects. The first fossils of modern cockroaches with internal emulsions appeared in the Cretaceous period. A recent analysis of evolution indicates that cockroaches originated at least in the Jurassic period. Gemini from the common Mesozoic Platodia and Mesoplatinidae.

Termites were seen as a separate species from cockroaches as termites. However, recent genetics indicates that they evolved directly from "true" cockroaches, and the authors now classify them as a "species" of Platodea. This evidence was backed up in 1934.
